A picture is worth a thousand words is an often used saying. There’s no doubting the attraction of pictures, particularly historical views of towns and landscapes for family history, so that we can see what our ancestors’ surroundings looked like in their own times.

We’ve received a book for review, the A R Edwards - Photographic Archive, published by Selkirk Regeneration Co.

Andrew Edwards was born on 30 December 1847 at Badminton, Gloucestershire, the son of Mathew Edwards and Agnes Campbell. He worked for Blackwoods, Edinburgh as a compositor before moving on to work as a photographer for the Wilson Photographic Co, Aberdeen. In 1879, he opened his own studio in Selkirk. He died in 1891. His son, Robert (1877-1965) eventually took over his father’s business.

The book is a collection of over 400, largely unpublished, mono landscape photographs of Selkirk, the Selkirk Common Ridings, the Ettrick and Yarrow valleys, the Haining, Bowhill, St Mary’s Loch, Philiphaugh, various towns and villages around the Borders and as far east as Berwick, Coldingham and Eyemouth, some famous Borderers and of the Edwards family.
There are short biographies of Andrew and Robert Edwards and colour photographs of some of the cameras used.
The front cover of this 252 page paperback shows photos of Andrew and Robert Edwards and 3 cameras.

This £10 book is a treasure for everyone in the Borders, especially so, for those living in Selkirk or with a Selkirk connection. Every bed and breakfast and hotel in and around the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland should get a copy for their guests, too.

You can buy it from our premises at 52 Overhaugh St, Galashiels, TD1 1DP, any Tuesday or Thursday or Friday from 10am to 4pm for the published price of £10, or order now by clicking the button below and selecting the appropriate delivery option:

Last summer, the Berwick 900 Our Families family history research project set up a small creative writing group to write fictional family stories about incidents and historical characters in Berwick’s, Tweedmouth’s and Spittal’s history, using research produced by the volunteers. There's lots of scope for imagining what led up to incidents, what impact it had on people, what happened afterwards and creating a family story. One story, a poem written by Sandra Whitnell, is about a woman murdered at Middle Ord, Northumberland, in December 1876.

This year, Linda Bankier, the Berwick Archivist will give a talk at Berwick Literary Festival about the variety of records available in Berwick Record Office, and the audience will hear excerpts from three stories based on research into the Berwick Town Council account books, a newspaper cutting from November 1863 about a crinoline that caused an accident and a poster.

The talk is on Friday, 21st October at 12 noon at the Holy Trinity Parish Centre, Berwick; cost £5. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194181216717132105.post-67649932762249039222016-09-02T13:15:00.001+01:002016-09-02T13:15:21.615+01:00Time-Travel in Peebles, Tomorrow (3 September)

This Saturday, Tweeddale University of the Third Age are organising a history event ‘Travel in Time in Tweeddale’ which will be held at the Leckie Memorial Bakehouse (behind the Leckie Memorial Church - see map at foot of page), Eastgate, Peebles from 10.30 am to 4 pm.
They’ll have a colouring corner for children, too.
The event is free and I’m looking forward eagerly to the day.

Donna Maguire, archivist and records manager to the Bishops Conference of Scotland, is giving a talk on ‘The pre-1855 Parish Registers of the Roman Catholic Church'.

The talk takes place at the Corn Exchange and Ormiston Institute, Market Square, Melrose, TD6 9PN at 2.30pm on Sunday, 29th May. Map.

The talk will be preceded by our Annual General Meeting but that's usually over quickly.

I’m eagerly looking forward to this talk.
Donna is going to tell us about the Catholic registers for parishes that were founded before 1855, the six Scottish dioceses and the records of the Bishops Conference of Scotland and its agencies.

You may attend the talk and the AGM whether you are a member or not.
Doors open at 2pm; the AGM begins at 2.30pm.

Knowing how to find Catholic records is vital in family history, even if you think you have no Catholics in your family, you may be wrong, as I was, especially if you can’t find the birth of one or more your ancestors.

I suggest you come early to get a good seat. We'll have a range of family history publications available to buy, and there’ll be light refreshments (donation expected) available after the talk.

If you have a problem with your family history, please discuss it (no charge) with one of our volunteers.

The talk was previously advertised for last October but did not take place then due to illness.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194181216717132105.post-91110589549367712202016-05-12T23:24:00.001+01:002016-05-12T23:24:40.534+01:00Was there a Red Cross Volunteer in Your Family ?The Red Cross have now made their World War I collection of records partly available with an index of World War I volunteers.

At the outbreak of war in 1914, the Red Cross formed a Joint War Committee with the Order of St John, raised funds, organised volunteers and paid staff to provide equipment and services in the UK and the theatres of war. Everyone was trained in first aid, some trained in nursing, cookery, hygiene and sanitation.

Most of the women became nurses, initially in hospitals in Britain, but as the casualties mounted, more were sent overseas to casualty stations on or near the battlefield or to hospitals. Many people offered their houses as convalescent homes for the wounded or as auxiliary hospitals; some town halls and primary schools were used too.

There were over 3,000 auxiliary hospitals across the UK. They were staffed by a commandant, a quartermaster, a matron, a cook and nurses. Local GPs often volunteered for work in the hospitals in addition to their ordinary work. The nurses were all volunteers, often they were too young or old or had family commitments to serve full-time. Male volunteers usually drove or accompanied the ill or wounded to and from hospitals, many acted as stretcher-bearers, a lot were sent to France as ambulance drivers, some being wounded in enemy action.

Volunteers also collected clothing and books for soldiers in hospitals, raised funds, made bandages and splints, acted as cooks, store-keepers, worked in the offices and just as importantly, provided food and cigarettes to soldiers arriving by ambulance train. One of my great-aunts married a soldier she met on such duty.

A lot of people were displaced by the war, in 1915, volunteers started visiting hospitals looking for people who had been recorded as missing; work that the Red Cross is still involved in. By the end of the war in 1918, 90,000 volunteers had worked in the UK or abroad. There were lots of famous volunteers including Agatha Christie and Vera Brittain, perhaps some of your family were volunteers.

To find out, use the index of World War I Red Cross volunteers..

You can search by forename, surname, location or hospital or role. The initial search takes you to a search results page that shows name, county, date of engagement, age when engaged. Clicking on the name takes you to a detailed page about that person.

The information provided comes from record cards and may include name, address, age, character, service dates, hospital, rank, pay, duties, commission, honours awarded. Pictures of the cards are also included. Annoyingly, first names weren’t always recorded, some just gave initials.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194181216717132105.post-3487773263250972462016-04-23T15:03:00.000+01:002016-04-23T15:03:03.095+01:00Ancestry Celebrates Shakespeare with Free Access to Parish and Probate RecordsAncestry.co.uk are offering free access to their parish and probate records today (Saturday 23 April) to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

The collection includes 39,000 records from Roxburghshire, Scotland and 6,500 records from Selkirkshire from the early 1500s to the mid- to late-1800s, National Probate Index (Calendar of Confirmations and Inventories) for Scotland, 1876-1936.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194181216717132105.post-79262637453138527332016-03-29T21:51:00.000+01:002016-03-29T22:03:30.112+01:00New Publications Sales List and Postage Rates

We’re pleased to report that we have just published another new Monumental Inscriptions volume on CD, for the Berwickshire parish of Bunkle & Preston, nestling in the foothills of the Lammermuirs but situated only a few miles from the county town of Duns.

In addition to the monumental inscriptions (gravestone inscriptions) at Bunkle churchyard, Preston old churchyard and new cemetery, the Hearth Tax of 1694 and the Militia Lists of 1798 and 1801, we have included other documents which shed light on the people of the parish and their lives:
The Fugitive and Porteous Rolls of 1684 list Cowan, Darling, Turnbull and other local family surnames.
Militia Families Vouchers for 1812, held by National Records of Scotland, list the payments made to the wives of the men serving in the Militia and include the names of children.
The Blackadders Cash Book for East Blanerne, 1821-1837, is an exciting find which Borders Family History Society will be researching further. We have included information on the 41 people employed as herds, hinds, blacksmiths, bondagers and house boys.
Another find, courtesy of a researcher in Canada, is a poem by a former pupil of Millburn school. John Aitken remembers those who attended the school in 1823 and includes places of residence and family occupations.
The Ministers of Bonkyl (the old name for Bunkle) & Preston are listed together with full transcriptions of the War Memorials in Bonkyl Church, in Preston and the Roll of Honour in Preston Recreation Hall.

We are indebted to the work of James Hardy, D C Cargill, James Robson and James Hewat Craw without whose earlier recordings, so many inscriptions and descriptions of stones, would have been lost.

The pre-1855 stones were recorded in 1969 by David C. Cargill but many have since been weathered and the inscriptions worn and some have completely disappeared. In the relatively short period since we started visiting the churchyard to record the stones, several have fallen over.

There are over 330 surnames and their variations listed in the Monumental Inscriptions: Adamson, Ainslie, Aitchison, Aitken, Allan, Allison, Anderson, Armstrong, Aubrey, Baillie, Ballantyne, Barclay, Barlow, Barrie, Bartram, Battye, Bell, Bennet, Bernsfather, Bertram, Black, Blackadder, Blackie, Blaikie, Blair, Blyth, Bogue, Bookless, Bower, Boyd, Braidwood, Brodie, Broomfield, Brown, Brownlie, Bruce, Burns, Cairns, Calder, Campbell, Carlisle, Carr, Carss, Carter, Cassels, Cassie, Chirnside, Chisholm, Christie, Clark, Cleghorn, Clinskill, Cockburn, Colville, Cowe, Cowen, Cowie, Craig, Cranston, Crawford, Crow, Curay, Currie, Cuthbert, Dalgleish, Darling, Darrie, Davidson, Davies, Deans, Denham, Denholm, Dick, Dickson.
Gail's family were mostly from the Roxburghshire area but were also in Berwickshire
and Lanarkshire (not to mention all through the Lothian area),
depending on the lands they purchased/versus where their money was
"made". Jim's forebears were from Lanarkshire in the late 16th Century and are thought to have left at the time of the Covenanters.

Gail
wrote "I have many men from New Zealand, Australia, USA, one from South
Africa and a few from UK who have been excited by what they have
learned as a result of testing their Y-Chromosome. They have worked
hard in order to raise sufficient funds for me to be able to offer
totally free, a number of Y-37 tests for any man living in Northumberland, the Scottish Borders, Yorkshire or lowland Scotland who has this surname and who has a family tree of his paternal ancestry back to around 1800 or earlier.

The
bottom line is to extend and "prove" our genealogy in a way that paper
trails have been unable. By that, I mean if we go back into history,
especially the 1600s (as an example) and look at the deaths, followed by
pestilence, followed by famines and we soon begin to realise that not
everyone who bears a particular surname is actually of that stock. I
say this because many young women with wee ones to feed were made widows
and frequently joined up with a "protector" who thus gave his name to
those
wee ones.

For those who are anxious about
DNA testing - the medical genes are not considered in the test that I am
offering as a "freebie". The test itself needs just two separate cheek
swabs. "

If you're a Riddle (whatever the spelling),
and you've got a family tree on the paternal side back to 1800, and you
would be willing to take the test, please contact Gail at the email
address below.
Were you or your family employed in the mills ?

Our next talk is this Sunday, 28th February when Gordon MacDonald is coming to speak to us. The title of his talk is ‘From Tweeds to Twin-Setts'. The talk takes place at the Corn Exchange and Ormiston Institute, Market Square, Melrose, TD6 9PN. Map.

Gordon’s talk will be about the history of the mills in Hawick and the Scottish Borders.

I warmly invite you to attend the talk whether you are a member or not. Doors open at 2pm; the talk begins at 2.30pm.

I find the history of the mills especially fascinating because although no members of my family worked in the Borders mills, some of them migrated from Dumfriesshire to north-west England to get better-paid work in the mills, there. I suggest you come early to get a good seat.

You’ll be able to see our newer publications; the 2 volume history of the Aitchison family by Pam Ray
and To Follow the Dogs and Carry the Stick by Bob Jaffray about shepherds in the Lammermuirs.

We'll have a range of family history publications available to buy, and there’ll be light refreshments (donation expected) available after the talk.

If you have a problem with your family history, please discuss it (no charge) with one of our volunteers.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194181216717132105.post-20245448971557071072016-01-21T21:22:00.003+00:002023-10-13T13:51:25.318+01:00New Book: 'To Follow the Dogs and Carry the Stick', by Bob Jaffray

We've published a new book, 'To Follow the Dogs and Carry the Stick', written by one of our members, Bob Jaffray.

The book's subtitle is 'Glimpses of the Herding Life over Thirty Years in Lammermuir 1935-1965', and as a retired shepherd with a family connection to herding in the Lammermuirs going back to shortly after World War I, Bob recalls his memories of living in remote cottages high up in the hills and his subsequent life as a shepherd.

As he writes, ‘by the 1980s, a new mode of herding came into being with economic considerations dictating much larger farms and higher flock numbers ....’. Thus a whole way of life changed and herding techniques and skills which had evolved over hundreds of years are in danger of being forgotten. Bob's aim in the book is to preserve them for posterity.

Times were certainly difficult by today’s standards, all provisions and essentials being left at a neighbouring farm as the track to the cottage was effectively impassable, certainly in the wet. Remote as it was not though forgotten by the church, it being written into the minister's’ contract that he should hold an open air sermon on the top of an adjoining hill; Windy Law ‘to bring the gospel to the heathens of Rawburn’.

Bob recalls his life at Longformacus Village School with memories of fellow pupils and teachers. Most interestingly, he has included a full list of all who attended the school between the years 1937 and 1945. The figures themselves reflect the period, the number of new admissions (normally 6 or 7 per year), triplicating in the years 1939 and 1940 because of evacuees from the cities.

There are recollections of the effects of World War II on such a rural community and how the effect of rationing was not as severe as elsewhere. In 1943, Polish troops were billeted at Longformacus House and the youngsters of the day seem to have mingled freely with the troops, been given access to the vehicles and shown their weapons.

After the War, working as shepherd with particular recollections of the harsh winter and the hardships caused. There is a detail of day to day life with all sorts of anecdotes and personal recollections thrown in as well as recalling the practices and methods employed in shepherding, now mostly overtaken.

Also included are Jaffray and Welsh (the author’s mother’s name) family trees and well as different maps of the Lammermuirs with copies of charts produced by the Blackface Sheep Breeders Association containing the names of different farms and occupiers, a glossary and more than 40 photographs.

An enthralling read, even for people like me, whose knowledge of sheep is barely more than the taste on my dinner plate - certainly a must for anyone connected with farming, shepherding or the Scottish Borders.

The book is 94 pages long on heavy paper within card covers and costs £7.50 plus postage.
