Free Access to Canadian Birth, Marriage and Death Records on Ancestry

I've just noticed that Ancestry are offering free access to over Canadian birth, marriage and death records on the Canada domain of the Ancestry website.

The offer is advertised as being valid to 20th February 2012, 11:59 p.m. (ET), and I think that equates to 4.59 pm on 21st February GMT.

As usual, you will need to log in or register with your name and email address.

Free Access to the 1930 United States Federal Census at Ancestry

This coming weekend, Ancestry are offering free access to the 1930 United States federal census.

The 1930 United States Census began on 2nd April 1930 for the general population of the United States (excluding Alaska, where it took place on 1st October 1929). It's the most recent United States Census for which personal data is available.

It provides address, names of persons and their relationship to head of household, gender, ethnicity (they said color or race), age, marital status, age at first marriage, college attendance, ability to read and write and speak English, birthplace, and birthplace of parents, language spoken before coming to the United States, year of immigration, whether naturalized, whether home is owned or rented, value or rent of home, whether home is a farm, whether there is a radio, occupation, industry, whether employed, whether a military veteran.

You do need to give your name and email address, but that's all, and then you get immediate access to the summary records, and you can download the page image for free.

Search Ancestry's 1930 United States Census records and read more.

The images have been freely available for some time (see Free Access to the 1930 United States Census blog of 3rd July 2011) from the Internet Archive but it was always useful to use Ancestry or Family Search to identify the image you needed.

Saving, Spending and Family History

Posters are going up around the Borders for our next talk which I'm giving on 26th February 2012 at the Corn Exchange, Market Square, Melrose, TD6 9PN. Map .

I'll be talking about coins, the kirk session, banking, savings, and the penny post, banknotes, cheques as well as other topics.

I've had some queries about strange money names in the kirk session records and I'll provide answers to them.

If you have a burning question about money in your family history, please comment below.

As usual, we warmly invite you to attend the talk whether you are a member or not. There is no admission charge.

We'll have a range of family history publications available to buy.
Light refreshments will be available after the talk.

If you have a problem with your family history, please discuss it (no
charge) with one of our volunteers.

The monthly 50-50 Club draw will be made at the meeting.

New Commonwealth War Graves Commission Website

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has revamped its website.

Some of my great grandfather's family died in World War I and at least one in World War II, though so far, I've only found one casualty in one cemetery.
When I clicked on the cemetery plan link, it was unfortunately missing.

Also I expected to see a link to The War Graves Photographic Project but that has disappeared, too.

Unfortunately I don't like it as much as the old website but perhaps it'll grow on me.

I can't find the things I found before on the other hand I have discovered their information leaflets, which I never noticed before.

In providing more criteria to search on, they've made it more difficult - you need to enter the whole of a date instead if just a year. On the other hand, they're promising that the 'additional information' will soon be searchable and that will be a bonus.

Search the casualty database for yourself.

Also they want information from you, so complete their survey.

Coldingham Monumental Inscriptions

Not much left to do on our Coldingham publication - nearly ready for final proof reading and all going well, it should be ready before the end of February.

As well as over 1000 memorials, the people listed in the 1694 Hearth Tax and the 1801 Militia Lists have been included. We have permission from the National Records of Scotland to publish the Militia Families Vouchers which includes the names of the wives and children of the men serving in the Militia in 1809, 1812 and 1813. Will also include the names of the Ministers who served the Parish and the War Memorials and Rolls of Honour.

The publication will include a more detailed index - Surname, Other Surname, First names and Date of Death.

Will update the blog when published.

Website Working Again

Our ISP resolved the website problems quickly and all the functions are working again.

Website Problems

There are currently problems with the database-linked parts of the website, like the Forums, Other Websites, and the Gravestones Index, the Magazine Article Index, the Poor Law Records Index, the Family Tree Index.

Queries and Surname Interests are also affected.

Some of the functionality on the Maps and Parish pages will not be available.

I reported the problem at 5.30 GMT and our web host has acknowledged the problem is with our web server and estimates 2 to 4 hours to resolve the problem.
